Discover the world of extended reality (XR)

WUR XR Day, on March 13th, is your opportunity to explore virtual, augmented, and mixed reality, collectively known as extended reality (XR). While these advanced technologies may not immediately seem related to science, they are already accessible for both education and research. With WUR's WANDER XR Experience Lab, there's now a hub for applying XR in education and science.

WANDER's ambition is to support education and science through 3D visualisation and immersive experiences. Thomas Ginn, team leader at WANDER, brings valuable experience in extended reality, previously in Leiden and now in Wageningen. "Our lab is unique. It's a One Wageningen facility, open to everyone interested in immersive visualisation. We offer support throughout the entire process, from development to implementation."

How does XR work? A prime example is a project where WANDER collaborates with the Amsterdam Institute for Advances Metropolitan Solutions (AMS) and the Municipality of Amsterdam on quay restoration. The city's ecologist noticed a lack of understanding among workers about how trees develop beneath road surfaces. To address this, several tree stumps were excavated to map out their growth. WANDER then created a 3D scan of these root systems and built an immersive viewer. This allows everyone involved in quay restoration to understand the complexity of the root system and take it into account, leading to healthier trees, reduced maintenance, and lower risk of uprooting during storms.

XR Pilot programme

To introduce you to the possibilities of XR, WANDER is organising an XR Day on March 13th. The event is open to all members of WUR, whether you're new to XR or an experienced user. The day will feature inspiring talks, showcases, and workshops highlighting the groundbreaking developments and applications of XR within and beyond the WUR community. Experience various demos or step into the gaming zone. At the XR Day, you'll be the first to discover the innovative projects and research initiatives emerging at WUR.

At the end of the day, the XR Pilot Program will be presented. Anyone with a compelling idea for using XR in education or research, but lacking resources to realize it, can apply for this program. WANDER will help bring these visions to life. More details about the program will be shared during the XR Day.

The WUR XR Day will take place on Wednesday, March 13th, at Impulse, from 9:30 to 16:30. Admission is free, including lunch and refreshments. Capacity is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot.
